Heat loss calculations and HVAC design for Edmonton homes

Ductscale designs HVAC for Edmonton homes from our base in Calgary. We do room-by-room CSA F280 heat loss calculations, heat pump and furnace sizing and duct design for new homes, infills, basement developments and secondary suites. Projects run by email and shared files, and most single-family homes take 3 to 5 business days.

Edmonton permit requirements we design for

The City of Edmonton requires HVAC permits for basement developments and secondary suites. The design has to show that 22°C can be held in all living spaces when it is -30°C outside, and the heat loss calculation is how that is shown. For a basement development, the City asks for a full-house heat loss calculation with the permit application, not just the basement.

For a new house, the heating and ventilating permit is applied for together with the building permit, and the work is done by a licensed mechanical contractor. Our calculations and drawings go in with that application.

Requirements change, so check the City's current HVAC permit page before you apply.

What we do for Edmonton projects

Every calculation uses Edmonton's design conditions and the City's 22°C at -30°C test.

  • Full-house CSA F280 heat loss and heat gain calculations
  • Calculations for basement developments and secondary suites, including when a suite needs its own system
  • Furnace and cold-climate heat pump sizing, with backup heat sized for -30°C
  • Duct design and duct layouts drawn on your plans
  • HVAC drafting for Edmonton contractors and design firms

FAQ

HVAC design in Edmonton: common questions

Do you need to visit the house?

Usually not. Plans, or measurements and photos for an existing home, are enough for most projects. Site visits are available when a job needs one.

Do your calculations meet Edmonton's basement and suite criteria?

Each calculation is set up for Edmonton's test: 22°C in all living spaces at -30°C outside, calculated for the whole house. The permit reviewer makes the final call, and if they ask for changes, we update the calculation.

How much does it cost for an Edmonton home?

The same as in Calgary. Heat loss calculations start at $400 and a full permit package starts at $900, before GST, for a typical single-family home. Every job gets a fixed quote.
